Doug Perkins

Hi, Sean. I am just finishing up my trip to NBR and I wanted to drop you a note to let you know what a wonderful time I had and how impressed I was with the resort amd its superlative staff. I have travelled extensively in Indonesia and elsewhere for surfing, both at land resorts and boat charters, and this was by far the best experience I have had to date. Greg was a fantastic host and unfailingly helpful in ensuring that I and the other guests got the most out of our trip. The attention to detail and bend-over-backwards attitude of Greg and his staff -- as well as Diah in Bali -- made it a holiday to remember.

My trip also coincided with Andrew Bowling's stay at NBR. In addition to the work Andrew performed around the resort and on the boats, he was a wonderful resource to the guests. Besides fixing up damaged boards, he must have donated half his medical kit to treat my various reef and other cuts, not to mention being one of the funniest and most entertaining guys I have met during my travels.

I will definitely be in contact with you in the near future to arrange for a return visit to NBR next season.

Best regards, Doug Perkins

P.S. Did I forget to mention the surf? We were blessed with fun, rideable waves each day during my two week stay. I'd say at least half the days were at least head-high, and there were more than a couple heart-in-your-throat double overhead-plus days... Few things more satisfying then kicking out after cruising one of those long walls all the way down the point...

I'm finally taking the time to touch base and let you know how much we enjoyed our trip to Nemberala Beach resort. First off, the assistance and diligent service both myself and the others in my party received from both yourself and Chris Loomis was exceptional.

The connections all the way through were great; Dia on Bali, Ferry (sp) in Kupang and everyone along the way. I travel quite a bit and I'm just starting to use these pre-packaged, all inclusive trips. It's so easy, and I think I'm ready for that!

The resort was first class, but what made it that way was Greg Rogers. I've never meet someone as professional as Greg in any capacity in the surf professional world. Myself and my fellow travelers agreed, wherever Greg Rogers is working, that's where we book!

Sean, this was my first trip with Waterways and I'm stoked. This was my 5th trip to Indonesia and I've never been to the same place twice but I'm definatly going back to Nemberala again someday. Good variety of waves, nice little village and not too many surfers. I look forward to working with you in the future. In fact we are kicking around destinations for next May.

Thanks for all your help with my trip. The trip was amazing and went off without a hitch. You guys have got that trip down, everything was so easy, especially for a girl traveling alone. I never felt uncomfortable and the people you have working with you are great. They even threw me a little birthday party.

Anyway, I've told so many people about the trip and showed them the pics I got of the surf. They all want to go, so I expect maybe one of them will actually contact you to get that set up. Thanks again for everything. Hope all is well with you.

My friend David and I had a great time in Nembrala a couple weeks ago.  They were saying that it never really got big while we were there but other than the first day we never had waves less than overhead and a few days the sets were double overhead.  We spent a few days in Bali on the way back.  We surfed some but all it did is make us realize how spoiled we were at Nembrala.

When it was time to return home, my heart sank. Everyday, when I woke up, I felt as if I were in heaven, I never thought that you could have too much of a good thing, until I came to Nemberala! I was sad to leave Indonesia knowing that I had barely scratched the surface of what the Country had to offer, great waves, fishing, diving, sight seeing, and shopping. I also didn't want to say goodbye to the friends that I had made along the way. I have to hand it to Sean and everyone at Water Ways Travel. They did an awesome job of arranging all the travel. Also I must thank Tim Newburn, and his family, for organizing the group. His diplomatic style, made the trip enjoyable and entertaining.

Gary, the captain of the Mahalo II, and his family, were the most gracious of hosts. Their experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm, made me feel safe, comfortable, and at ease, just like a vacation should feel. Their knowledge of the traditions and customs of the country, was a real plus to my enjoyment of the area. I couldn't imagine having a better guide for an introduction to Indo. Gary has a very light hearted, laid back, intelligent, professional, experienced, and confident style, I would feel safe with him in any ocean. The accommodations at the resort, with the nurturing care of our wonderful hostess,Diah, felt every bit like I was at home. Never once did I need or want something they couldn't provide.

I learned and experienced so much on this trip that family members and friends tell me that I have actually grown as a person. The trip changed me in so many ways. If I had the chance to go back, there is no doubt in my mind that I would grab it in a heartbeat. Truly life changing.

Of all the beautiful days I spent at the resort, the first afternoon we took a dinghy to the tiny island of Do'o, sticks out in my mind. We anchored off the beach and took a picnic onto shore. As we layed out our towels on the unaltered white sands, looked around at the palms and aquamarine water, none of us could stop saying that it was the most beautiful place we had ever seen, a paradise if there ever was one. Why I am sitting here at work when I could be there!

With the very courteous help of Waterways travel, My Wife andf I organized a trip to Nemberala with a group of family and friends. Our exented family traveled from California and West Australia. The surf never dissapoints and the left at Nemberala is amazingly consistent.

We booked the resort and the Mahalo II all to ourselves.

Besides the great surf, everyone really enjoyed the fishing, hiking, snorkeling and sunbathing by the pool. The fresh seafood and lobster were a real treat as well. We will be back next yearr for sure!!!

The left at Nemberala is my favorite wave in the world. It is my home break and it is where I learned to surf. The wave has so many different moods. Sometimes it is big and scary, sometimes small and playful. I don't think I'll ever get tired of surfing there.

David Saltman Family — Summer of 2005

Perhaps the only joy greater than making clean turns across perfect, pealing Nemberala lefts, is the opportunity to experience this Indian Ocean paradise with friends and family. Sharing airbrushed sunsets, fresh sashimi and cold Bintang beer, with mates from high school, was out of this world. And there are no words to describe the pride one feels paddling up the channel as your kids charge the peak like pro’s, hooting like banshees. The resort and the boat accommodations were soulful. The staff could not have been more friendly or responsive. Yes, its half way around the world, but Nemberala is well worth the journey, and the Saltman clan will be back again for more.

The food at Nemberala Beach Resort was incredible: fresh fruit, locally caught lobster, and home-made chocolate cake. I still think about the spanish-makrel sashimi that just melts in your mouth. After a long day of surfing, dinner is a delicious cap on a perfect day.

Surf & Sun & Fish.

It dosen't get any fresher than this!

This is a trip of a lifetime and we are going to do it again, and again and again. It's an annual adventure for our family.

The vast number of surf resorts I could choose from is not an easy decision. Travel distance, type of surf, accommodations, food, boats, land resorts, health risks, cultural considerations and lastly your friends pictures and endless ravings, were are all factors in making my decision on where to go.

I had seen pictures and heard the stories of West Timor. Boat trips are exotic but can be cramped. Land camps can be a bit rough too. There are a thousand surf camp options I considered when choosing where to go. In the end it came down to a few friends I knew who were going to West Timor. In the end, what could be better than surfing with your buddies? All the eating, drinking and exaggerated descriptions of the days surfing feeds my soul. I didn’t care that it was half way around the world. Taking the Mahalo II to our final destination at the Nemberala Beach Resort was an adventure in itself. The resort sits front and center on one of the best left point breaks you’ll find. The new bungalows are so exquisite your wife or girlfriend will never want to leave. The staff pampered me until I couldn’t’ take anymore.

Now about the main attraction; the surf was everything anyone could ask for from beginner to pro. What I valued most, and what made my stay at the Nemberala Beach Resort so rewarding, were the surf options. I surfed 4 different breaks, the infamous left out front and 3 other rights all accessed by the resort’s speed boat. If I had had more time, I could have surfed several more breaks. The resort owners knew which breaks were on and they graciously accommodated everyone’s surf preferences. By the end of the trip I was catching bigger waves and surfing better than ever. I can’t wait to return. I am also looking forward to staying a few days in Bali on the return leg. I would highly recommend the Nemberala Beach Resort

The island of Rote hosts one of the most amazing left-handers I've ever ridden. It's a world class wave just outside the reef that shelters the Nemberala Beach Resort. I stayed there for nearly a month. The staff and other guests became like family to me. My time there was magical. The owners of this resort have created a luxury vibe in one of the most remote places I've ever been. Their attitude towards surfing and having fun is so laid back, there's no way you can't relax and feel at home here. The Nemberala Beach Resort is an amazing place and I hope that I can make it back there soon to create more unforgettable memories!"

Craig Natvig — Summer 2005

Nemberala Beach is a phenomenon. A vast reef, protecting the strip of beautiful beach, laden with palm trees. A slice of paradise! The mere remoteness promotes a feeling of calmness and peacefulness inside me that is rare to experience in this time. With absolutely zero commercial business activity going on in the area, you feel as though you have reversed time. Front row and center from the resort is the “left” called Nemberala. Mostly perfect in shape, the wave can transform into many characters that can cater to all types of surfers. Even more special are the several other reef breaks that are perched off the smaller, desolate islands in the nearby vicinity. The resort is the “key” that will open the door to this unique surfing experience.

Jenna Newburn — Summer 2005

Nemberala Beach Resort was the most amazing place I have ever been. From the first day at the mud volcanoes to the shell collecting beach, to the empty, absolutely perfect lefts; not to mention the GOURMET food...sashimi, chocolate cake, homeade bread...it goes on and on. By the end of the trip I was surfing better than ever! For sure the best trip I have ever been on, Tim and Gary are the best hosts in the world...I can’t wait to go back! It is worth the travel time, you cant get better than this!
